Drop Off & Parking

Please remember these two changes from the 2019/2020 school year:

  1. Turning left from Red Oak onto Miller Ave. is no longer an option during drop off and pick up. This is a right turn only intersection now during these times.

  2. There is no longer parallel parking allowed along Red Oak across from the school.

Everyone’s highest priority is the safety of each child in the A2 Open community! All parent/guardian drop off and pick up is to be located in the Red Oak parking lot.

There are five guidelines we need ALL adults to follow:

    1. Please do NOT enter the Red Oak lot from the two clearly marked one-way exits.

    2. Please do NOT park or exit your car while it is in the drop-off lane.

    3. Please DO wait patiently in the mornings to pull into the 8-10 spaces of the drop off lane (location B on the map) before allowing your children to exit or enter the car. Children MAY NOT load or unload along Red Oak or Miller, they must wait for the car to enter the school parking lot. This is a SAFETY issue, please do not allow your children to circumvent this rule.

    4. Please do NOT park or exit your car if waiting on Red Oak or Miller.

Please review these more detailed expectations as well, and help us keep everyone safe by following these rules. Contact the school with any questions about these guidelines: (734) 994-1910.

Why Being On-Time Matters

Class starts at 8:15 a.m., the first bell rings at 8:10 a.m. to remind students they have five minutes to get to their classrooms. We need every student here BY 8:15 a.m. and are asking that parents make it a high priority for their family. The first 15-20 minutes of everyday are crucial to setting the mood and direction of the day. The missed connections for the tardy students matter and the disruption to the classmates who have arrived on time is disrespectful.

Red Oak Parking Lot (the main lot in front of school)

The Red Oak parking lot has one continuous drop-off lane that is designated as the student drop-off area. Please drive safely, at very reduced speeds. Please don’t park in the drop-off lane ever – it is a fire lane, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The intended use of this lane is as an express drop-off area.

What do we mean by express drop off area?

  • NO PARKING or EXITING YOUR CAR. NEVER, SERIOUSLY.

    • Anytime you have to exit your car or enter the school, you must park in a legal parking space.

  • Express means quick.

    • Whenever possible, have your children exit the side closest to the curb, quickly and safely only to the sidewalk without having to be in traffic.

  • Express means efficient.

    • If you need to have an extended conversation or exit the car for any reason (getting backpacks from the trunk, extra hugs, etc.), then please park in visitor parking instead of using the drop-off lane.

    • Your time at the curb should be around 10 seconds.

  • Express still means safe.

    • As traffic clears and you can pull forward, please pull as far forward as possible, to allow for the maximum number of cars to be moving ahead at once.

    • If ten cars lined up at the curb, dispensed children quickly, then exited safely in order, the next line of cars would be in place quickly.

    • All walkers or families who park, approaching school from the west should use the sidewalks and walk around the Red Oak parking lot rather than through it.

  • Express means respectful and mindful.

    • Cars leaving the curb should have “the right of way”, and cars in the traffic lane should yield to cars that are pulling away.

    • Please don’t pull up into an empty space until the traffic ahead of you clears.

    • Refrain from cell phone use so you can be aware when the space ahead of you is open. Pull forward as far as possible.

Brooks Street Parking Lot (the lot behind the school)

There are to be NO PARENT VEHICLES in the Brooks Street lot or circle drive.

  • Please do NOT pull into these spaces in the morning – they are needed for staff parking.

  • Please do NOT park in the circle drive EVER – the circle drive is a fire lane, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

School buses use the Brooks Street loop for drop off and pick up. Their schedule is not always as predictable as you might presume but they arrive between 8:05 - 8:15 a.m. and leave by 3:30 p.m.

  • Please note: If your child plans to take a different bus in order to go home with a friend, you or your child must bring a note to the office:

  • Include your name & contact information, your child’s name, and the bus number or route.

If you must drop off on the Brooks Street side of school:

  • You must do so at the end of the driveway right at Brooks, and direct your children to use the sidewalk all the way up to the school.

  • They should not be crossing the parking lot at any time during the AM or PM traffic cycle.

Do you possess a disability license plate or placard?

  • If so, please know that the disability parking spaces at are located in the Brooks Street parking lot only.

  • ONLY parents with disability plates or placards should enter the Brooks Street lot.
